The Gauss weapons, also referred to as coilguns, were a type of projectile accelerators that consisted of one or more electromagnetic coils in the configuration of a synchronous linear electric motor. These were used to accelerate a magnetic projectile to supersonic velocity. The Confederate Military weapons exploited that technology, shooting magnetic vanadium bullets combined with depleted uranium to achieve incredible piercing capability and range of fire.

Coilguns consisted of one or more coils arranged along the barrel that were switched in sequence so as to ensure that the projectile was accelerated very quickly along the barrel via magnetic forces. These coils had been exposed as far back as the Machine Purge Era, giving the weapons a bulky and cumbersome look, but newer models were much sleeker in appearance and better protected from potential mechanical damage.
